Containment v. Restraint

As previously stated, PMAB® talks about "restraint" while SAMA uses the term "containment" to present methods of limiting a person's movement to protect the person or others. "Restraint procedures" often bring to mind mechanical devices that immobilize a person's limbs. The same images generally come to mind when we talk about manually restraining a person. In contrast, SAMA uses "containment" to better describe the process of limiting a person's movement for reasons of protection but not trying to eliminate movement which would cause greater injury.

PMAB® teaches restraint procedures that include moving a person from the Horizontal Restraint to sitting to standing to a face-down transport. SAMA, in contrast, teaches how to use the Assisting Process during containment on the ground and release the person at that point. By eliminating the need to move a person to sitting (which could injure the person's spine if done incorrectly) and not going through the physical effort necessary to help the person stand, more employees can qualify to use the procedures and the risk of injury from containment can be greatly reduced.
